HEâD NEVER TOLD HER his name. Pansy knotted a green silk bathrobe three days later, yawning as she entered the kitchen, the limbs of her well-loved body feeling as loose as untied Christmas ribbons. Heâd come to her for the past three nights, and every night was better than the last. Still, she was beyond frustrated with herself. Why hadnât she managed to learn more about him? A few nights ago, sheâd been straddling him, feeling confident he was right where she wanted him, and then suddenly heâd turned the tables, reversed their positions and trapped her beneath him.
âMust have been some dream,â said Lily.
Hardly a dream. Every blessed second of these past few nights had been as real as it gets. Fighting the heated flush rising on her cheeks, Pansy glanced at her sister, who was clad in a bikini from an early morning swim. Seated at the table with a towel draped around her waist, Lily was shoveling down spoonfuls of granola and rapidly jotting on a sheet of expensive note-paper sheâd probably gotten as a sample for possible sale in her store.
âSit,â commanded Vi. Two hands settled on Pansyâs shoulders and pressed her into a chair. âIâll get your cereal. You look like hell.â
âGee, thanks,â said Pansy dryly, sending Vi, who was dressed for work in her mail carrierâs uniform, a long, sideways glance.
âTousled hell,â Lily clarified, eyeing her sister curiously. âWhatâs going on? Youâve looked like this for days, Pansy. Was there someone here last night we donât know about?â
âYou should talk,â Pansy returned, her voice hoarse from lack of sleep. âI could swear I heard Lou Fairchildâs car roar out of the driveway early this morning.â
Lily smirked. âHe was gone by midnight, if you must know.â
âOne,â corrected Vi.
âShe only knows this,â assured Lily, âbecause Garth Garrison was still here.â
Pansy chuckled. âI thought you hated him, Vi.â
âI do,â returned Vi loftily, âbut I intend to get my hands on that lottery money.â Her voice hitched with excitement as she continued. âYou know, I really do think he won. Heâs been talking about buying a second home, a condo in Manhattan, and heâs pricing sailboats.â
âEven without a lottery win, that manâs probably loaded,â said Lily. âEverybody knows he can afford better than that tumbledown shack he calls home, so that doesnât mean anything. Besides, Lou came right out and informed me that heâs got a huge secret he wants to share with me. Huge. That was the word he used. He says heâs just not ready to tell me about it yet.â
âHeâs probably afraid to announce heâs got the hots for you,â said Vi. âAlthough the rest of us noted the obvious long ago.â
âArenât you observant,â Lily returned dryly.
âVery,â assured Vi.
Pansy considered telling her sisters neither man had won, but she hated to throw a wet blanket over their manhunt. She hadnât seen her sisters this happy about their prospects for years. Besides, she couldnât prove her point without revealing her indiscreet nighttime trysts with a stranger, something that would turn Lily and Vi into protective mothering hens.
